An Idea that I've had

Something I have had a consistent interest in is the mythology of cryptids and monsters from all around the world. Recently I was looking into something interesting regarding the “were hyena” of Arabic and North African folklore. Now upon hearing the word “were” next to the word hyena, one might think that it is like the “were wolf” of European/ Western folklore. But rather than a man who turns into a wolf it is a hyena that turns into a man. This slight difference had me thinking about what would happen if these two creatures meet?

The idea that’s been swirling in my head is more on the action side of things but I would like to try and explore the meanings behind the flare and excitement. To ask certain questions like what does it mean to be a ravenous animal that turns into an upright man and vice versa to be an upright man who reverts to being animalistic? Beyond that I would just really like to explore a world where these creature from different cultures all around the world do exist and interact with each other regardless if it be civilly or otherwise.

Milwaukee Art Museum

2-D Piece: Anselm Kiefer, German, b. 1945, Midgard, 1982-85, oil and mixed media on canvas.

I am both fascinated and enraged by pieces accepted as art that look as if the artist had taken a machete and hacked up some poor soul’s internal organs and let them spew on a canvas. It probably says something about me, like I can’t tolerate that which has no order or sense, however I feel that notion is neither here nor there. This feeling is nothing new to new to me, having taken art classes where I had to learn about big famous names like Picasso to Pollok it has usually been the latter who’s art and those similar that I have a slight disdain towards. But I always try to keep and open mind because if there is anything that dries me to wretch more than something I don’t understand such as types of art, it is people who believe things they don’t understand should not be seen or heard of. To me this piece is not completely out of my good graces because there are things about I do like. It focuses darker colors like it greys and blacks to the bottom and lighter up to the top, it gives it a feeling of depth and space. There is a concentration of roundness that further emphasize the idea of depth, like I am looking into a great pit; the spat of white at the near center almost like a bright light in the pit or even just to signify the bottom. The large grey streak that almost circles itself but then veers off into a corner makes me think of a large snake looking down over the pit. The fact that this piece is called Midgard the name for Earth in Norse Mythology makes me think of the myths of the great world serpent.

3-D Piece: Alberto Giacometti, Swiss, 1901-1966, Large Seated Woman (Grande femme assise), 1958-59, Bronze, ed. 2/6.

Where I previously aired my grievances over art that is formless and void of any sense, I feel with this piece I am looking at something that strives to strike a balance between that which has no sense or order and that which does. Here we see a woman, but her body is not sculpted to be smooth like most sculptures. The sculpture has these strange protrusions and depressions in it body, when we look at the sculpture as a woman it is like these weird or abstract features of her body are a reflection of all the things she tries to burry. Her faults, her insecurities, her rage, and her sadness. I felt that I couldn’t take just one photo so I took three; one of the front, a profile and one of the back. It was the sculpture of the woman’s back that has my favorite little thing about the whole piece; a sizable hole like a dark secret that she wants to leave behind. The fact this piece is called Large Seated Woman makes me think of a motherly/matriarchal figure who maintains her composure as she tries to hide the faults of her character lest she lets them destroy her authority.

Observation

Observation

Three people all assumedly Caucasian, two men and one woman, appear to be friends doing homework, all have laptops out. Strewn about their table are cups, mugs tea cups with saucer, water bottles, cellphones and pens They’re conversations mainly consist of talking about classes, at one point one of the men said to the other that “they can copy their notes” every so often they will diverge into other topics with the sounds of laughter involved here and there but eventually revert back to the topic of homework, either while still talking or in complete silence. The woman sits to the right, brown hair red lipstick, dressed in mostly black save for an orange jacket. She seems to have a tendency to repeatedly bounce or jitter her right leg. The two men sit together on the left, the one who sits away from the wall wears a red shirt, next to his laptop is a yellow lined paper pad with a pen resting on it, he appears to do nothing much save for checking his phone every so often. The man who sits closest to the wall has glasses, wears a dark blue hoodie with white stripes going a across it, he appears to have long hair underneath a cap worn backwards, like the man next to him in the red shirt, he appears to do nothing peculiar just checks his phone every now and then. Out of the three of them it is the one woman in the orange jacket who displays a unique repetitive behavior, in the form of bouncing one of her legs up and down.

From across at the end of a long table, lined with many chairs, sits two people, one a women of assumedly Asiatic decent that sits to the right. Across is the other. A man, assumedly Caucasian, sits the left. The man wears a red shirt and from time to time sips from a drink with a lid and a straw. The woman wears a blue tank top, has dark hair cut very short. Both individuals appear to be very animated in their conversations. Both the man in the red t-shirt and the woman in the blue tank top move their arms and body with such energy that indicates interest and enjoyment in the others company and discussions. Their arm movements indicate both energy and purpose, as from time to time, the woman will gesture her hands methodically as if to instruct or just merely to specify something in detail to the man across from her. The man will in return mover his arms and hands in an almost pointing manner without specifically extending just his index figure. Just a very general or casual pointing, lazily or relaxingly pointing with the entirety of his hand. When he’s not doing that he has his hands under his chin as he devotes his attention to what the woman across from him has to say. The man in the red shirt who sits to the left of the long table and the women wearing the blue tank top who sits to the right across from him on the long table, have been at it with conversations for a quite a while now.

Observation 2

Amjad Moubarak
The recent observation I made was that of woman sitting at a distance away from me, she sat at a table doing her homework. She had dark skin, with braided hair in a ponytail and she wore a bright pink jacket. The room that we were in was very dark so the jacket really did have a sort of brightness to it, almost as if it was producing its own source of light. The woman mostly sat at her table with her face resting on one of her hands. She didn’t appear to do much of anything besides casually glancing at her homework. Every so often she would stretch out a hand to lift some the papers that littered her table almost as if she were in search for something. But it would not be long until she would put the papers back on their respective places on the table and resume her original state of sitting back in her chair with one arm up in and L position with fist closed and her head resting upon said fist. There was a cup of what I assume to be coffee, the woman did not seem to care much for its presence, in all the woman’s composer was that of a lack of interest in her surroundings, rather being more absorbed in her thoughts instead.
